Copyright does NOT prevent you making a functionally-equivalent copy provided it does not actually contain anything taken directly from the original. Look at the original Compaq PC BIOS, or DR-Dos. I've been thinking about writing a pick-a-like, and have even tried to start. Who's interested in joining me? I would like to call it "olinpic" (for Pick on Linux) but I suspect Pick Systems legal dept would come down like a ton of bricks if I did. As for licencing, I'd rather be more like MySQL - which basically says that it's free for non-commercial use, or if you download it to use yourself, but if you include as part of a further product you are selling (or if that product relies on MySQL) then you have to buy a licence. I'm quite happy - and do think we should - release the code, but I would be happier retaining some control over it. Mostly just to say "if you're making money, plough some back", but you'll notice most (?all) free software products tend to have either one person or a very small team at the helm. And I MAY (or may not) be able to offer a small server on a lease-line later on. I'm hoping to end up administrating a small charity setup and might well contribute to the cost of the line if it means I can have a 64k link all to myself for this project between 7pm and 7am GMT. -- Anthony W.
